Wayne Gregory, now a fixture in Torrey Pines State Beach Park

This week, Gregory’s founder, Wayne Gregory, got a little belated Christmas gift of sorts. In honor of the fact that Wayne is still full speed ahead at the company that bears his name some 32 years after it was founded, a group of employees got together (unbeknownst to him) to get him a fitting gift that would signify his commitment to Gregory the company and to building the best packs on the market (yeah this is our blog, but we believe that to be true). The gift also had to have some significance to Wayne, of course, and also be something that would mean something to others, especially outdoors folk.

So, behold the Wayne Gregory memorial picnic bench that will reside at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve just north of San Deigo starting this spring. The bench has arrived on site this week and will be moved into its permanent location in the next couple of months.

The cool thing about this gift is that really does reflect to many degrees who Wayne is. First off, Gregory was founded in San Diego, where Wayne is originally from, and this beach remains one of Wayne’s favorite places (though it took a lot of cajoling to get that info out of him). He still visits there with his kids and grandkids when he’s down south. Read More »

A very Gregory Christmas

It’s not often daughters tell their fathers how much they appreciate them. So this Christmas, I’m excited to do just that by gifting my dad a Gregory backpack to thank him for the years he spent exploring the Rocky Mountains with me.

Like most kids fortunate enough to grow up in or around mountains, I learned to ski and backpack in the same year I learned to walk. Today, the outdoors not only remains a huge part of my personal and work life, but continues to be something my dad and I enjoy together. And for that, I am extremely grateful.

So, if there are any fathers out there reading this, trust me on this, all the complaining, powder days spent on the bunny hill, ‘Dad, that doesn’t match my outfit,’ ‘are we there yet’ and all the gear, is well worth it! They’ll thank you for it later.

And maybe one day, they too will repay you handsomely with the latest and greatest Gregory pack.

Merry Christmas, Dad!

Me and my Dad backpacking in Summit County, Colorado.

I’M BACK!!!!

20090929-img_6271.jpg

I have returned from my amazing four and a half month trip to Europe.  I am pretty glad to be back on familiar terrain and to be able to speak to anyone at any moment.  It can be a big challenge if you aren’t multilingual I have to say.  It’s funny how you just get used to staying a little more quiet than usual if you are like me and only really speak English.  UGH!  It is great to be home.

Gregory Gives Back to the Community

At Gregory we’re getting into the holiday spirit by reaching out to our local community here in Sacramento and helping a family in need.  About a month ago, our local bike cop (who keeps our hood safe and is often hanging around the office geeking out with us over new gear) told us about a program through the Robertson Community Center where you can adopt a family and help them during the holidays.  With Sgt. Valdez’s recommendation we decided upon a family with a single mom, 3 boys (ages 8, 6 & 4), and one more baby on the way, who were in desperate need of everything from clothing and food, to furniture and general household and kitchen items for their apartment.

So the Gregory Gives Back group rallied employees, our landlord, friends and family and started collecting everything we could (big ups to craigslist and everyone in the office with large enough cars and muscles to help move furniture).  In no time, an empty cube was filled up with tons of stuff to donate to this family, and we’ve been dropping it off as we obtain it for a couple of weeks now.  We were even able to get management to donate some ca$h to buy some of the items we couldn’t find, like new bedding, new clothes, some backpacks for school (obviously) and a brand new bike and helmet for each child.  Employees donated everything else you could think of - rugs, tables, lamps, beds, clothing, toys, groceries, kitchen items and even a stroller!  I’m so proud of everyone here for coming together and helping to make this great donation to a family in need.

And the giving doesn’t stop there.  We’re hoping that we can help this family out a few more times next year by allocating some of the funds we have in the Gregory Gives Back budget to them for any future items they may need.  We hope you all have a great holiday season and if at all possible, consider donating to those less fortunate.  Even the smallest item can go a long way to helping someone else out.

What do you get when you combine RSN TV with Outside Magazine?

The most badass channel on the tube!

…and yet another resource to keep you in the know about outdoor lifestyle as well as offer local advice for what to do in resort towns.

On June 1, 2010, Resort Sports Network TV will debut as Outside Televsion Network, reaching RSN’s previous 61 million viewers annually.

The rebranding is the result of a partnership between RSN TV and Outside Magazine, which will reach outdoor enthusiasts across all mediums, including print, broadcast, and digital. Outside plans to complement RSN’s traditional coverage on resort towns with content like ‘Best Towns,’ ‘Best Jobs,’ and ‘Best Gear’ (ehem Gregory Targhee pack).

So in a sense, the collaborative effort between Outside’s editorial team and RSN producers means bringing one of the most revered outdoor magazines to life, which is RAD.

Unfortunately, for those who don’t live or travel to resort communities, the program won’t be available to you come June. However, online segments are available on RSN’s website and will most likely be available after the rebranding. Hopefully, with success, Mariah Media (Outside’s parent company) will be able to expand their reach down the road.

If not, there’s always rioting and we do happen to know how to use paddles and ice axes pretty well. I’m just saying…

New thru-hike to add to the list: Rim of Africa

A major conservation effort in South Africa is underway with the construction of a 650km trail set to open in October 2010. What does this mean for you? You have one more hike to add to your life list. This trail constitutes the first true, long distance, hike on the continent of Africa. You may be well aware of The Appalachian trail, The Continental Trail, and the Pacific Crest Trail, but what about the trails beyond U.S. boarders? Here’s a quick run down…

  1. Camino de Santiago, Spain - 500km
  2. Sendero de Chile, Chile - 9700km (not yet completed)
  3. And now, Rim of Africa, South Africa - 650km

The new Rim of Africa trail will follow a natural route that stretches from the West Coast of the country to the Outeniqua Mountains. The trail routes through both nature preserves and private lands seldom visited by outsiders. The full trail will take roughly 48 days to complete, but you will be able to access the the trail in four different stages. Read More »

Facial Hair Goes Futuristic (sort of)

About a month ago, we posted the theme and categories for this year’s 2nd Annual Gregory Facial Hair Contest.  The theme was “It came from the Future” and contestants wasted no time starting the growing.  The more hair you had to work with, the more ridiculous you could probably make your final ‘entry’.

So just to refresh everyone’s memory, here were the categories that participants were able to compete in, courtesy of Mark - one of our designers and last year’s big winner.

Overall Grand Prize - Based on originality, creativity and relevance to the theme, not on length, amount or authenticity of hair.
Less is More - This year, the “Less is More” award is given as a consolation prize to the person who tries really hard, but comes up short.
You Missed the Point - To the person with the best retro beard.
Gutsiest Move I Ever Saw - To the person who risks professional reputation and public embarrassment, just for some measly contest.

Well the results are in and honestly, I have to hand it to these guys.  They not only grew out their hair and had pretty substantial beards for over a month, but in order to fully qualify, had to walk around with their shaved facial hair creation for a full week before final judging.  And they did - on the bus, light rail, to the grocery store, to work - fighting against better judgment and the appalled and nervous looks from fellow citizens of our fair city of Sacramento. Enjoy the before and after pictures!

Gutsiest Move I Ever Saw: Congrats to George McCloskey of Ask George fame and our resident customer service guru (so you can’t really see it, but he’s got a stripe that continues from that strip on his chin, down under his chin):

Less is More: Congrats to Sherwin Tactay who works in the engineering department, checks quality and makes sure that all product is ready to go to market:

You Missed the Point: Congrats to Brad Johnstun who helps plan and purchase everything that we use to make packs:

OVERALL GRAND PRIZE: Congrats to Marketing’s own Shane Dunne, who’s use of the fabled neck beard, combined with lightning bolt-esque designs made him the clear winner:

And what does one win in such a prestigious contest? Why a trophy of course. Here’s the one Shane received and is now proudly displayed at his desk:

(CREEPER)

Oh, and what about Mark you ask? He was last year’s winner yet is visibly absent from this year’s winner’s circle.

Totally Boned It: We’re making up a new category that wasn’t in the initial list, just for Mark. He didn’t follow his own rules and wound up shaving the day before judging (guess he wasn’t scoring any points with the ladies and was getting fed up). Here’s your honorable mention buddy:

See you all next year!

Did you know today is International Mountain Day?

After the UN named 2002 the International Year of Mountains, the decision was made to declare December 11th International Mountain Day from 2003 onwards to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life. The day also focuses on highlighting opportunities and constraints in mountain development and building partnerships that will bring positive change to the world’s mountains and highlands.

The theme of this year’s International Mountain Day is ‘Disaster Risk Management in Mountains,’ recognizing the hazardous nature of living in the mountains due to the threat of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, avalanches, landslides and floods.

The meaning of the symbol for the day is as follows: three equilateral triangles representing mountains, the blue on the first ‘mountain’ representing snow and ice, the orange on the second representing mineral resources, and the green on the right representing crops.

While the day is considered a global observance and not a public holiday, use it as an excuse to escape work a little early and celebrate the mountains in whatever way you can. We know we will!

Other Holidays or reasons to celebrate today:

Hanukkah Begins at Sunset

National Noodle Ring Day- no information found on this, big suprise!

UNICEF Anniversary

Attention to detail for the holidays over in the Gregory prototype lab

At Gregory, we’re fortunate to have a prototype lab right in our office. We have the ability to make and cut patterns, fabric, and foams, and our two sample sewers - Irma and Nick - can create pretty much any product from scratch. This comes in handy when R&D gets to the testing phase for any new product. Within minutes, they can go back to the sewing room, take a feature that’s not working right (harness angle off, for example), and have it updated.

Irma has been with Gregory since 1994, so when it comes to product, she knows pretty much every stitch it takes to put a pack together. In her free time over the years, she began working on a little project that we at the office get to enjoy once a year around the holidays. Confused? Let me show you.

Irma has made miniature product ornaments to decorate the tree we put up in the office. Not only do they look exactly like their larger counterparts from afar, upon closer inspection, you realize they are exactly like the real thing.  Zippers, buckles, interior organizer pockets, harnesses, backpanels - all sewn where they should be. It’s just another testament to the craftsmanship and attention to detail the people at Gregory pride themselves on, and we are so proud to have Irma (and her talent) as part of the team.

The newest (and I think coolest) addition this year is the miniature Makalu Pro - complete in terms of features, suspension and materials -  except for one thing.  Irma couldn’t cut a piece of the stay to make the suspension complete.  No joke, that’s all it’s missing!

You can see lots more of Irma’s handiwork on our Flickr site, as well as a size comparison (in case seeing them on the tree didn’t convince you of how small they are).

And sorry, in this particular case, not for sale!

And We Have A Winner…

Last month we started a photo contest on the Good Life page of our site.  Each month, we promised to give away a pack to the person whose uploaded photo received the most ‘likes’ (in this case, thumbs ups).

Well we have our first winner - Congratulations to Stephen who’s picture, Eyes on the Prize – Mt. Rainier Summit captured the most votes in November.  This photo shows him wearing a Gregory Denali Pro and heading up to Camp Muir on Mt. Rainier with perfect summit weather.  We’ll be sending him a Z 25 and featuring this winning photo for the entire month of December on our homepage – instant celebrity!

We’ve decided to make things a bit more interesting.  For December’s contest, the prize will be a Day and a Half pack from our Classic Series.  Not sure what this is?  Well that’s because it’s one of our products offered exclusively in Japan.  These packs use bomber materials, some of Wayne Gregory’s original patterning and designs and are favorites overseas.  Now’s your chance to own one and make all your friends jealous that they can’t easily get one (unless you’re friends live in Tokyo and can visit the Gregory store).

So head on over to the Good Life page and upload your photos today.

GOOD LUCK!
