The Nor’Easter is on its way back!

In 2008, EMS organized a big outdoor festival/party up in the northeastern U.S. appropriately named the Nor’Easter. Now, during this event, there was a wee bit of rain, which only makes the name more appropriate.

This year, here in just about two months time, the Nor’Easter is back, and this time there will be no rain - they promise. Here at Gregory, we’ve signed on again as a sponsor, and we’re psyched to be making the journey from Sacramento out to Loon Mountain, in Lincoln, N.H. for the event, which is Sept. 24-26.

Part festival, part rock concert, conservation event, and part outdoor clinic, the Nor’Easter is designed more than anything to bring outdoor types together for a week of fun.  While the lineup of clinics hasn’t yet been set, the bands playing have been named, the final event of the season of the Unified Bouldering Championships takes place Saturday night, and the event is right by Rumney, N.H. and some great cragging. Besides climbing, they’ll be a cyclocross race and trail running.

Here’s a little video shot with Gregory athlete Joe Kinder at 2008’s event. It was a homecoming of sorts for Joe, who learned to climb on the crags in the area.

Climbing in Joshua Tree for a great cause

One of Gregory’s favorite organizations we support is San Diego based non-profit group Outdoor Outreach. Their mission is to empower at-risk and underprivileged youth to make positive, lasting changes in their lives through comprehensive outdoor programming. They are one of just a few organizations like this in the country to utilize outdoor physical experiences to provide youth with the support, relationships, resources and opportunities they need to become successful adults. Since its founding in 1999, Outdoor Outreach has taken more than 5,000 youth on over 1,500 outings, including rock climbing, snowboarding, surfing, snorkeling, mountain biking and backpacking.

This October, Outdoor Outreach will be hosting their annual Joshua Tree Experience event, a two day, fully catered event where participants can climb, camp, hike and practice yoga, all while fundraising for at-risk and underprivileged youth. To participate, you must raise a minimum of only $350 and there are prizes for different fundraising levels (Gregory packs being one of the available prizes). If you’re unable to attend the JT Experience but still want to help out, don’t be discouraged! You can still set up a fundraising page and qualify for the prizes. In 2001, 80 participants raised over $70,000 to directly benefit Outdoor Outreach. This year’s goal is set at $100,000 and we need your help!

Sound awesome? Told you so. Visit the Joshua Tree Experience page to register and build your own fundraising page. Once you’ve reached the $350 minimum you’ll be allowed to sign up for weekend clinics. Happy fundraising!

Gregory Sponsors Israel’s Mountain to Valley Relay

This year’s Mountain to Valley relay race saw 1,500 runners, with registration selling out in just 10 days. A total of 160 teams ran this unique 200 kilometer race, at varying levels of difficulty for a full 24 hours. The teams consist of 8, 6, 4 or 2 members who relieve each other at pre-arranged relay stations throughout the race course.  Each team is required to have an ‘escort car’ used to leap-frog all of the team members who aren’t running a given section. The race begins on Qalaat Namrud, at the foot of Mount Herman and ends at the community village of Timrat in the Jezreel Valley.

This year, a new ULTRA category was introduced. A total of 18 runners were included in this category, and they were all required to run solo for 127 km. Gregory’s distributor in Israel, M Gravity, sponsored this group and awarded each runner in the Ultra category a Rufous pack, designed with input from Gregory’s own trail running ambassador, Hiroki Ishikawa. One runner from Brazil, Mauro Chasilav, traveled from Brazil specifically for this race and ran the entire 200 kilometers solo!

At the conclusion of the race, there was a party with food, drinks, massages for the athletes and sponsor booths for everyone who participated. Gregory was on hand to showcase product and recommend packs to runners to fit their individual needs. Congrats to everyone who participated, we’ll see you again next year!

These boots are made for walkin’

Get out your walking shoes and join the Gregory crew tomorrow, May 15th, for the National Walk-a-Thon to raise money and awareness for the Angelman Syndrome Foundation.

For the second year in a row, Gregory Mountain Products will be sponsoring the walk as well as the following lunch in Sacramento. This event will represent the first fund raising initiative of 2010 and the foundation will be officially added to our page of Organizations We Support.

The Angelman Syndrome Foundation raises awareness for a neuro-genetic disorder that occurs in 1 and 15,000 live births and is often misdiagnosed as cerebral palsy or autism. Through research, education, information, the foundation raises awareness and offers support for individuals with Angelman Syndrome and their families.

If you can’t walk or volunteer tomorrow, Gregory set up a page on the Angelman Foundation website where you can donate to the cause. Our original goal was to reach $1,000 (which we reached last year) and we’ve nearly doubled that number this year at $1,950- just shy of $2,000 with a little less than 24 hours until the event!

The walk in Sacramento will take place at William Land Park from 10am to 2pm tomorrow, the 15th. For more information about tomorrow’s Walk-A-Thon events around the country, visit the Angelman site.

South of the Mason-Dixon

It’s that time of year again when a few folks from Gregory pull out their best tie-dye and head south of the Mason-Dixon to Damascus, Virginia for Appalachian Trail Days.

Thru-hikers past and present as well as anyone keen on all things hiking and backpacking will gather next week, May 14-16, for the annual hoedown. Celebratory events started this past weekend in Damascus, the rough mid-point along the Appalachian Trail, and will continue through the 16th. For a list of events, check here.

Gregory has made the trip every year for several years to take part in the festival and help backpackers repair and fit packs. It’s a great way for us to celebrate all that inspires us as a company- good people, mountains, backpacking, and, of course, the occasional Canadian tuxedo.

See you there!

Not that you need an excuse, but…

Beginning Saturday the 17th, the National Park Service will open all 392 National Parks free of charge until April 25th for ‘National Park Week‘. There will be a good number of special events throughout the week, so make sure to look into what maybe happening at the National Park near you.

So if you’re like me, paying the entry fee or buying the Annual Park Pass in exchange for exploring our National Parks is an easy trade. However, if your friends are anything like mine, well, let’s just say they’ll have no excuses come April 17th.

Also, feel free to post pictures on our Good Life page of you and your Gregory pack enjoying a free day at the park!

Back to the grind

We’re back in the office in Sacramento after after an exceptional weekend at the Red Rock Rendezvous.  The weather was perfect this year, no high winds or hail storms to deal with as in the past, and everyone was psyched to be there.  Tons of sponsors came out to support the event, and with product, trip, and other donations from each of these companies, we were able to raise $10,000 for the Access Fund! In one night, in one auction!  Proper.

Gregory supports bouldering competition at student-run recreational facility

At Gregory, we believe in getting involved our community and the events taking place in our own backyard.

So when a student-run and funded recreational facility at Sonoma State University, located North of San Francisco, approached us to help sponsor their 6th annual Bouldering Competition as part of USA Climbing’s Collegiate Climbing Series, the answer was a no-brainer.

The competition will be held this weekend, on Sunday March 20th, as one stop in a series of competitions throughout Northern California. Collegiate climbers from all over Northern California will have the chance to compete and win a number of prizes including a Gregory Torre 33.

While we’re impressed by the fact that the facility is entirely student-run and funded, we were even more impressed to here about their environmental sustainability initiatives as well. For instance, they use reclaimed water from their toilets, they operate almost completely off the grid thanks to their solar panels, office furniture is made completely out of recycled glass, sunflower shells, and other sustainable materials, and their climbing wall floor is made out of 16,000 lbs. of recycled tires.

So not only are we happy to support a great climbing competition that’s run and funded by the students, we’re also excited to support an environmentally conscious recreational facility.

Good luck to the competitors!

Why go to the Red Rock Rendezvous?

If the RRR were around when I was a young climber, I would have made it my annual event. I think my parents would have supported the endeavor and paid for it! It’s such a positive gathering with so much to offer to any climber out there. I think the one thing that draws people and what would have drawn me in are the clinics. They aren’t boring hands-on clinics on better footwork or techniques for low angle stone. No! Trust me! It is geared toward the person who wants to learn from the best and most famous climbers like Tommy Caldwell, Cedar Wright, Conrad Anker, Alex Honnold and even ME!!!! The clinics are from the best and delivered to you right at the cliff for the entire day. Think about it…how many events do this sort of thing with THAT may professional and very knowledgeable climbers? NONE!!! Absolutely none. This is the time of the yaer where us professional climbers share what we know best for an entire weekend. For the person interested in “Fast and Light Multi-Pitch Climbing”…there is a clinic for it. There are clinics for women who want to climb like women!!! Whatever that means!! Chris Lindner offers a course in taking big falls. He sets you up in the air and you do nothing except take HUGE falls all day…Totally safe of course. There is the “Photog Course” which  teaches climbing photography tactics. There are SO many options it’s overwhelming. In fact most people have to return the next year just so they can catch that one clinic they didn’t take because they were in another one…HA!

There is entertainment such as slideshows, music, a party, a HUGE DINNER!!! Aw man…it is all in the sun, all in a beautiful place and all withour community of climbers. I am pretty psyched for this year’s event and I will see you there I hope!!! It’s going to be a blast!

Red Rock Rendezvous Here We Come

This Thursday, George, Molly and myself will be leaving SacTown on a jet plane. Destination…Vegas.

I know what you’re thinking.  Vegas???  Why put yourselves through that??  Well luckily we’ll get to the airport and high-tail it directly west.  Out of the city, away from the hustle and bustle (there may be a quarter or two lost in some slots on the way out of the airport) and straight to Red Rock National Conservation Area for this year’s Red Rock Rendezvous.

The Red Rock Rendezvous is one of our favorite events, and we’re psyched to be a sponsor again this year.  It’s a climbing festival centered around teaching and clinics for all levels.  Some of the world’s best climbers are on hand to teach newbies the basics and help more advanced climbers master specific skills.  There are a ton of clinics to choose from and after you register and buy your ticket in, you’re able to select one full day clinic for either Saturday or Sunday and then as many other 2 hour clinics as you can handle on the other day.  Climbing not really your thing?  There are also clinics offered for mountain biking, yoga, backpacking, wilderness first aid, trail running, trail cooking, photography, and the list doesn’t stop there.   There are slideshows every night, a dinner for ALL attendees on Saturday, and plenty of music, revelry, yoga, comps, and service projects to keep you busy all weekend. You can view the entire festival schedule HERE.

So what’s our part in all of climbing fun and madness? We’ll be on site in the vendor area showing off some of our brand new product - namely the Fusion LTS line of packs that our ambassador, climber Joe Kinder, helped design. Stop by the booth to get fit for a Gregory Pack and learn why they are the most comfortable packs on earth (and maybe even beyond).  Joe’s going to be at the event all weekend as well, he’ll be running clinics on Redpointing, both on Saturday and Sunday.  We’ll have tons of Gregory goodies to give away, including some packs, so you best be there. George will be there to answer all of your technical pack questions and get you fit for a pack.  We also sponsor the service project for trail maintenance and to help clean up during the event so we leave the gorgeous Red Rock area just as pristine as when we got there.

Still not convinced this event is for you? Stay tuned for Joe’s perspective on the event, from the eyes of a climber. We’re sure he’ll get you psyched and inspired. If you can’t make it out to Vegas this week, mark Red Rock Rendezvous on your calendars for next year.  It is always at the end of March and is a yearly event.  Once you go, you’ll never miss one again.  We haven’t.
